A waterbody can be visible on a map without providing lawful shore access. A marina, private shoreline, trail, conservation area or municipal park can have its own parking, entry, hours or fishing restrictions.

Toronto and GTA shore-trip checklist
1. Name the waterbody: Lake Ontario, the Don River, a harbour, a tributary or a nearby lake are not interchangeable regulation entries.
2. Confirm access: check the official map and the local property manager. Do not cross private land or treat a boat launch as automatic fishing permission.
3. Check the FMZ and the intended species: seasons, limits, sanctuary dates, bait or gear restrictions may differ from what you expect.
4. Check conditions and safety: shoreline conditions, weather, water level and local closures can change the practicality of a trip.
