The 4-step Ontario regulation check
1. Search the exact lake, river, bay or tributary. Similar water names can point to different places, so use the official map or the regulation summary description to confirm the waterbody.
2. Find the Fisheries Management Zone. Ontario is divided into 20 FMZs. Zone rules set the starting point for seasons, size rules and catch or possession limits for many sport fish species.
3. Select the fish species and your licence type. A Sport and a Conservation licence can have different limits; combined limits also apply to some groups of fish.
4. Read the waterbody exceptions last. A named lake, river reach, sanctuary, bait restriction or gear restriction can override the general FMZ rule. If an exception applies, it is the rule that matters for that trip.
FMZ rules are the starting point, not the finish line
An FMZ tells you the general framework, but it does not automatically answer every question for a specific shore, lake or river. Ontario’s summary lists species exceptions, waterbody exceptions and fish sanctuaries separately.
For example, a fish may have an open season in a zone while a particular tributary or sanctuary is closed for part of the year. Never assume that a general rule wins over a named exception.

Save the current official page or PDF for the relevant FMZ, the exact waterbody exception if one exists, and your licence summary. Rules can change, and an app or web guide should never be your only legal source.
